Lady Pats varsity and JV win in season opener
By Vivian Risch, Sports Editor
“It’s good to get the first one out of the way,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “To come on the road and get two wins, the JV and varsity.”
The JV Lady Patriots won by one, 19-18, and the Varsity Pats made it look a little easier with a 46-32 win over the Lady Indians.
UC led at all quarter stops by one, 11, 16 and 14 at the final buzzer.
“The girls we thought would score for us got it going and came back to wrap it up,” Gray said. “And Brooklyn Wilson, Haylee Richards and Zoe Murphy came in to give us a lift.”
Madison Gray opened the second quarter with three inside field goals and a pair of free throws to lift the Lady Pats to a 15-7 lead. The UC center also nailed a three-pointer in the third quarter and was the game’s leading scorer with 17 points.
Trailing, 21-10, at halftime, Milan stepped up its play in the second half. Junior Cionna Bailey scored 13-of-her team-high 17 points to boost the Lady Indians.
Union County’s Taylor Pinkerton finished with 13 points, including three from 3-point land.
Rebounds were a near toss-up. A pair of 6-footers on the Milan roster and another pair at 5’11, tested Union County on the boards. The Lady Pats topped the Lady Indians, 22-15.
JV Pats win
UC pulled off a one-point, 19-18 win over Milan after neither team could go ahead by more than four.
UC hit back-to-back inside shots when Jordan Tipton fed Faith Richardson in the first quarter.
The low-scoring second and third quarters ended with Milan leading, 5-4, at halftime and 11-9 after three quarters.
A strong offense, Tipton, Lauren Alldredge and Richardson, also played good defense to edge Milan, 19-18.
