Brack places fifth at Union County Invite

LIBERTY – The Franklin County varsity girls' golf team finished fourth in the nine-team Union County Invitational at Liberty Country Club on Tuesday, August 1. It was the second tournament of 2017 season for the Lady Wildcats. Franklin County senior, Kendyl Brack, was awarded a medal after finishing fifth overall at the tourney with a score of 82.

Just like the day before, the Lady Red Devils of Richmond posted the top team score. After winning their own invite on Monday, the Lady Red Devils made it back-to-back wins at Liberty. Richmond ran away with the victory, shooting a team score of 331. The top four individual scores from each team combined for the team score.

The next closest team, and second place finisher, was Connersville at 377, 46 strokes behind Richmond. The host team of Union County was able to claim third place with a score of 378.

Franklin County finished just out of the top three. The Lady Wildcats combined for a team score of 390. Franklin County was a little short-handed during the tourney. The team fielded five players, but junior Abby Orschell had to withdraw because of illness.

Brack led the Lady 'Cats with a score of 82. She was followed closely by Dana Branstetter, who carded an 86. Sophomore Maggie Brack made improvements from the Richmond Invite by posting a score of 96. The final qualifying score for FC came from Jade Allen, who scored a 126. “We had some solid play out of Kendyl and Dana,” FC head coach Marisa Mears said. “Obviously, we have some work to do if we want to get in position to repeat as conference and sectional champions, but this is why we compete in these early tournaments.”

Five other teams finished below Franklin County in the standings. East Central (397) and Batesville (432), two other Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference teams, finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Wapahani (433), Monroe Central (443) and Northeastern (519) also participated in the tourney.

Richmond claimed the top two individual scores, as well as first place in the invite. Jacey Cornett was the overall low-medalist with a score of 71. Teammate, Karissa Owens, followed closely behind with a 73 for the day.

Union County's Haylee King placed third on her home course by shooting a 78 on the 18-hole course for the third best score of the day. Rachel Kroger of Connersville tallied the fourth best score with an 81. Brack's 82 was the fifth best individual score.

The Lady Wildcats got another chance at winning an 18-hole tournament on Saturday, August 5, competing in the Greensburg Invitational. The team was also in action in its first dual meet of the year on Monday, August 7, visiting the Lady Red Devils at the Richmond Elks.
