Lady Wildcats run over Shiners in opener

By John Estridge, Sports Editor

Rising Sun – There are some goals first-year Franklin County High School girls basketball coach Joe Adams has: run, run, run and run some more.

Those goals were evident Friday night, Nov. 2 at Rising Sun in the season opener for both schools.

FC defeated the Lady Shiners 56-33.

“Rising Sun scored two or three times, and we pushed it and scored buckets before they could set up,” Adams said. “We scored six points just like that.

“In the second quarter, I looked over at their best player and she’s dying,” he continued. “I said ‘let’s go girls. We’ve got them where we want them. Keep going.’”

And it was that pivotal second quarter, where the Wildcats stretched out their lead.

FC had a four-point advantage after the initial quarter, 14-10.

That elongated to 13 at halftime as the Wildcats outscored their hosts 20-11 in the second set of eight minutes, making the score 34-21.

Wildcat senior Jenna Orschell scored a double-double with 13 points and a dozen rebounds. Five of her 12 rebound, were of the offensive variety.

She also hit seven-of-nine free throw attempts en route to her team-leading 13 points.

Jenna also made three-fourths of her two-point attempts.

She was joined by two other Wildcats in double figures. They were senior Abby Orschell with 11 points and junior Ashlin Hill with 10 points.

Juniors Taylor McCreary and Kairee Hodapp each garnered seven rebounds to help the cause.

Abbie and fellow senior, Megan Getz, each dished out three assists to help their teammates.

Abby, Hill and Jenna also shared honors for stealing the most as each Wildcat came away with five steals.

In the junior varsity contest, sophomore Kloe Bolos went off. She scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats to a 61-6 pounding.

She was followed by junior Laura Hildebrand’s 10 points. Sophomore Rae Ertel led all the Wildcats in rebounds with eight. Freshman Jenna Bruns contributed with six rebounds.

Ertel also led the team in assists and steals with four and 10, respectively.

The JV Wildcats shot an amazing 53.6 percent from the floor in two-point attempts, 30-of-56.

FC played tall East Central Tuesday night, Nov. 6. Results were unavailable at press time.

EC has two games under its belt, defeating South Dearborn in the season opener on Halloween, 65-28. Then, the Lady Trojans lost to Heritage Christian 34-26 on Saturday night.

This weekend, the Wildcats host Northeastern Friday night and then entertain Centerville one night later on Saturday night.

Northeastern comes into the contest at 1-0 after demolishing Randolph Southern 52-34 Friday night.

Centerville is 0-1 after losing to that same Randolph Southern team, 44-25 Saturday, Nov. 3.
