Board votes to fix CC school

The Union County College Corner Joint School District held the first school board meeting of summer on Monday, June 12, and finalized a bid to fix to the elementary school in West College Corner.
With masonry work needed to the north and west sides of the elementary, it was time to finally fix the problems. A recommendation from interim superintendent Joe Backmeyer to accept a bid of $84,940 from S.A. Boyce Corporation from Muncie, was accepted by the board with a 6-0 vote.
“This will go a long way towards stability,” Backmeyer told the school board after the vote.
Backmeyer acknowledged more work will be needed in the future to repair the aging building, but this is a much needed to start.
The rest of the meeting was uneventful and quiet compared to the previous three meetings, something several board members joked about prior to the start of the meeting. It was a welcome calm to the board members as they look forward to the new beginnings as Chris Winchell will take over superintendent duties in July. Winchell could not make the meeting on Monday after an unforeseen circumstance arose at his current school.
The meeting concluded with the goodbyes to assistant superintendent Al Sustarsic and Backmeyer, as it was their final meetings.
Sustarsic joked he will soon be hitting the golf course, and Backmeyer told the staff on-hand how much he appreciated the warm reception he got during his short tenure.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 10.
