Lady Pats are sectional runners up

Atrocious weather conditions at Knightstown last Saturday put a damper on the IHSAA Girls Soccer Sectional Championship match, but had little effect on the Centerville and Union County players and fans.

“Rain, rain, rain,” UC coach Brad Abbot said. “What a great game despite the weather.”

The Lady Patriots and Lady Bulldogs battled to a 0-0 tie after the first 40-minute half. The second half ended in a 1-1 tie.

Centerville scored first when Mackenzie Tipton put the ball in the net with 16:45 remaining.

Good defense soon found striker Kendall Jones breaking toward the goal, not once, but twice within a three-minute span. Jones scored on the second drive to even the score at 1-1.

The final 11:45 in regulation time continued the defensive battle.

UC goalie Kyla Joe Miller made nine saves against the Lady Dogs.

The match continued with two seven-minute overtime periods, and the score still stood 1-1.

The final challenge in breaking the tie is a penalty kick shootout. The teams alternate sending five players to score on penalty kicks.

Annemarie Persinger and Sarah Daggy scored on the shootout. Centerville had three good shots to win the shootout, 3-2, and the match.

“I am so PROUD of the way we played the game tonight,” Abbott said. “It was exciting, and the defense was awesome.”

Through the relentless rain, not once did players stop to wipe away the rain or hesitate to make a play. It was a game that brings pride to fans in the stands, win or lose.

Centerville advanced to the IHSAA Regional at Heritage Christian on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Lady Bulldogs play Triton Central at 10 a.m. And Southmont plays Covent Christian at noon.
