Lady Patriots 54-48 win over Milan Indians is good start

Lady Patriot coach Scott Gray breathed a sigh of relief after Union County picked up their first win of the season, a 54-48 win that handed Milan their first loss of the season.

“It’s good to be here with a first game win,” UC coach Scott Gray said.

Milan beat South Decatur, 51-37, earlier in the week.

After building a quick, 18-7, first quarter start, UC never trailed but had to fight off Milan in the final quarter.

“Rainey Shepler played a heck of a game tonight,” Gray said of his sophomore center.

Shepler split her 15 points between the first and second quarters and was dominant on the boards in the first quarter with five rebounds. She finished with a team-high eight rebounds.

Milan trailed by 13 at halftime and 14 after three quarters but closed to within six, 48-42, in the fourth quarter.

After Milan’s 6’2 senior center Maddy Roell fouled out with 1:13 on the clock, Tara Williams and Fayth Hill free throws in the closing minute gave UC 54 team points in the first game of the season. Taylor Amberger scored the last field goal to lift Milan to 48 points.

Milan finished with three in double digits. Dakota Wolfe led with 14 points, Cionna Bailey had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Lexi Wert added 10 points.

Shepler led a Union County double-digit foursome including 11 points each from Tara Williams and Madison Gray, and 10 points from Taylor Pinkerton.

“Madison played well tonight,” Scott Gray said. “She had 3-4 assists, good for a big girl.”

Gray’s six total assists and two from freshman classmate Genny Antrim, led UC in assists.

The Lady Patriots are young this season with but two seniors, both of which are currently on the injured list. Underclassmen are adequately filling in including 5’10 Gray and Antrim, a 5’0 guard.

“Some game situations we’re not good at yet,” Scott Gray said. “Way to fast than we should be. Need to slow it down. We’ll get there.”
