Union County Cheerleading Squad third place at state

Union County High School cheerleaders put an extra week of practice to good use last Saturday at New Castle Fieldhouse, amid stiff competition.

The Union County High School Cheerleaders received a large trophy for their third-place finish in the Varsity Division of the Indiana Cheer Championship.

“I am so happy with the girl’s performance,” Cheer coach Kelsey Dare said. “They hit an absolute perfect routine. Third in the state is amazing!”

Unlike other cheerleading routines, UC made no mistakes, no falls and received zero deductions by the judges. So why third place and not No. 1?

Remember, this was state finals, with more than eight state qualifiers competing for the No. 1 spot in each division.

In Varsity D, Knightstown finished first, and Our Lady Of Providence was second.

“We are happy with the girls’ performance,” Dare said. “Now we are going to start on a TEC routine. It will likely be similar but hopefully add some more elite stunts. Good performances and good results give us that much more motivation to do well in March.”

The Tri-Eastern Conference Cheerleading tournament is March 7, at Lincoln High School.

UCHS cheerleaders include: Erin Bell, Keirstin Dunaway, Madison Hornung, Lauren Kassens, Ryleigh Thompson, Lydia Yamashiro, Madeline Powers, Kamryn Brock, Allyson Gayhart, Sarah Myers, Karagan Reuss, Kelly Bruns and Roya Walton. Dare, Melissa Davis and Libby Brashears are coaches.
