Chidester is town attorney

Marissa E. Lane, Staff Writer

Liberty Town Council appointed a new town attorney at its first meeting of the month on Monday, Feb. 5.

The previous town attorney, Jaime Harvey, resigned at the end of 2017, stating that she had too many obligations to continue to serve as town attorney to the best of her ability. Her services were available to the town as needed in the interim while the council sought out new legal representation.

Walter S. Chidester of the Richmond law firm Boston, Bever, Klinge, Cross and Chidester sent the town council a letter of engagement in January that met the council's requests: a commitment to attend one town council meeting per month and charging a similar rate to Harvey's. Chidester's rates are $2,500 per year and $170 per hour for additional services.

Chidester previously served as the city attorney for Richmond for 12 years.

At its meeting, Liberty Town Council also:

*heard from utilities head Matt Reuss about the hiring process for two open positions at the wastewater treatment plant

*heard from Police Chief Andrew Jordan regarding the applicants for the Liberty Police Department

*chose to go with ETC Security for several town buildings after deliberation

*named Jerry Paul as representative to WUR Solid Waste Management District Board
