Patriots’ 10-0 shutout wraps-up TEC
Joey Weller pitched his seventh straight Tri-Eastern Conference win at Tri High last week and put at least a piece of this year’s TEC title in the bag for the Patriots.
The fifth inning 10-0 game-winner lifted the Patriots to 7-0 in the TEC with the Centerville game yet to be played.
At Tri last week, Weller allowed three hits, a walk and 11 strikeouts to put the conference championship a step closer to Union County’s dugout.
UC went up, 2-0, in the second inning, and the score didn’t change until the Patriots rounded the bases eight times to close the door on a 10-0 win in five innings.
Zander Kottka went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Preston Scott also had two hits, two RBI and a double.
Last Saturday the Patriots ventured into virtually unknown territory at the Big Cat Classic at Elwood,
“I don’t know a lot about either of them,” UC coach Jeff Mathews said prior to the Friday afternoon departure. “Elwood is
playing well. We’ll just see what we can do.”
Union County defeated Elwood, 2-1 in the first game and came back to beat Twin Lakes, 7-4, in the second game. The Patriots stand at 20-3 to date this season.

In the seventh inning, UC won on a squeeze play with Zander Kottka making the dash to home plate.
Noah Hartley and Mason Miller worked on the mound for the Patriots. Hartley gave up five hits, a run and struck out two in five innings. Miller gave up two hits and fanned a pair in two innings.
At the plate, Scott, Kottka and Shepler had two hits and Shepler had a double.
In the second game of the Classic, UC finished with seven runs on 11 hits, two errors and left nine on base, to beat the Twin Lakes Indians, 7-4.
Stansberry went 3-for-4 at the plate while Weller, and Kottka had two hits each. Weller and Scott were long ball hitters with a double each.
Early lead changes settled into a 7-4 Union County lead in the fifth inning and the Patriots never let go.
UC returns home on Wednesday, May 16 to host Centerville and Milan on May 17.
