Band members give their all at state fair

By Vivian M. Risch, Staff Writer

“The kids are really resilient,” UC Band Director Kyle Vogele said after Saturday’s State Fair Band Day performance. “They performed at their highest level.”

Vogele’s high praise came after a string of delays in the planned schedule.

The day began at 8 a.m. with a warm-up, loading the trailer and bus, breakfast on the band room lawn and then they began the 87-mile trip to the State Fair Grounds. There were at least three “rest stops”. One stop was planned. The other stops were for road construction on Interstate 70.

Together with road construction and an overload of traffic, the exit for the fairgrounds was missed and further delayed the band’s arrival time of 12:30 p.m.

The UCHS bus and truck and trailer were ushered onto the fairgrounds and into their assigned area by Band Day personnel at approximately 2 p.m. with performance time set at 3:12 p.m.

Once in place, everyone jumped in to unload the trailer, set up electronics and percussion, prepare instruments, change into uniforms and get on with the show.

With a bit of a rush to make track entry, the Marching Patriots proceeded to the start line and began their performance.

‘I really think that was one of their stronger runs.”
