Lady Patriots beat Wapahani to advance

By Vivian M. Risch, Sports Editor

One down and one to go!

Union County blanked the Wapahani Lady Raiders, 4-0, in the second game of the IHSAA Girls Soccer Sectional at Knightstown last week.

“I thought we played real well,” UC coach Brad Abbott said. “We tromped on them in the first and I think it set them back.”

Kendall Jones scored first on a shot that bounced off the goalie. Ten minutes later, Sarah Daggy put the ball in the net to give UC a 2-0 lead.

“Defense was great,” Abbott said. “We kept the ball down here most of the time.”

The Lady Pats struck quickly in the second half when Abigail Fields found the net just six minutes into the period.

Kendall Jones followed up with UC’s fourth goal to run the score up to 4-0 and played defense until the final buzzer.

“For first time on turf, I thought we did real well,” Abbott said. “The ball plays a lot of funny games on the turf.”

The 4-0 shut-out, put the Union County girls in the championship game with the Muncie Burris Owls. Burris defeated Knightstown, 3-2, to advance.
