Lady Pats beat Seton

By Vivian Risch, Contributor

Five days between games isn’t a lot of time to prepare, but the Seton Catholic Lady Cardinals’ homework made a difference.

Union County and Seton played each other at Lincoln’s Holiday Hoopla Tournament last weekend and met each other again this week in a regularly scheduled game.

Seton lost both games but used a different approach that set UC back, in the first quarter.

“They went triangle and two (defense) against us,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “It took a while to get going.”

Seton led 3-1 to start and went on to lead by four (7-3) before UC clicked.

Taylor Pinkerton’s steal and score and Fayth Hill’s assist to Haylee Richards tied the score at seven and the Lady Patriots never looked back.

“Once they got it figured out, we were okay,” Gray said. “We worked on better screens and better coming off those screens. We needed to see that defense again. So, overall I’m pretty happy.”

Pinkerton’s first-quarter steal was the first of 10 for the UC junior. Both Pinkerton and Madison Gray finished with 15 points, and Rainey Shepler added 10.

The Lady Pats held a 15-9 lead after the first quarter and went on to lead 38-12 at halftime.

The refreshed Lady Cardinals came back with their best offensive effort to out-score Union County, 13-12.

That set the stage for a UC comeback in the fourth period with a 14-point offensive effort to go with the defense limiting the Cards to three. Final score, UC 64, Seton 30.

A full game of shared scoring gave UC the upper hand. Gray put a dozen players on the court and 11 scored.

“That’s the difference - all of these (girls) in the scorebox,” Gray said while scanning his score book. “Everyone stepped up tonight and played their game and when you do that you end up with a win.”

Seton was led by senior guard Paige Klaine who scored 15 points, half of Seton’s total points.
