Patriots gear up for post season at Wayne County Classic

By Vivian Risch, Contributor

The Union County High School wrestling team put its best foot forward last weekend at the Wayne County Wrestling Classic hosted at Northeastern High School.

“I was very pleased with the Patriots,” UC coach Dan Kelich said. “We made the biggest stride of the season, with two big wins over New Castle and Northeastern and could have easily had two more against Winchester and Tri.”

UC hosted Centerville on Thursday, Jan. 10 and then they have a week to make final preparations for the Tri-Eastern Conference meet, and another week before entering the IHSAA Sectional.

For the first time this season, UC filled eight weight classes with good individual results. Here is Coach Kelich's summary of each member of the team as they head into the TEC meet and Sectional.

•Alex Fuller (5-3). Alex had some very good matches and a few that he lost he should avenge in the postseason. It should be fun to watch him close out his career at UC.

•Matt Hampton (2-6). Matt is our wild card. He knows a lot of wrestling and has a ton of experience and needs to put it together. He is capable of competing with anyone and winning against anyone he will face this postseason.

•Max Johnson (3-5). A first year wrestler with a ton of potential. He already has a solid feel for the mat and needs to be more aggressive and attack first.

•Morgan Krom (6-2). Morgan really battled and won some very tough matches against very good wrestlers. He works extremely hard and will always have a bigger gas tank than anyone he wrestles. He should make a deep run this year.

•Skyler Edwards (3-5). Skylar had the toughest weight class this weekend. He wrestled a couple of semi-state to state caliber kids. He is extremely coachable and has a great attitude. We are working on building his confidence and a solid finish in the postseason.

•Tucker Coffman (8-0). Tuck is Tuck. We are building each day and each match for Feb. 16 (second day of State). We continue to increase his already solid stamina and work on his chain wrestling and nonstop motion. It's going to be a fun, final ride with him this year.

•Kainin Klein (6-2). Kainin is working through an injury and I am slowly working him back into full practices. This was his first full meet in about a month. He wrestled very well. He knows a lot of technique and is solid with it. Right now it's about getting his conditioning up and blocking out the discomfort he experiences with his injury that is about as healed as it will be until the offseason.

•Melachi Wright (5-3). Melachi has been a great addition to the team. He is very coachable and works hard. We need to build up his gas tank some more and work on body positioning and finishes. He should make a solid run in the postseason.

•Emma Sharp has been sidelined with a broken nose. She will be back in action this week. She has done

Light practices but we've held her of competition to heal. I'm looking forward to her competing at 113 lbs. after wrestling at 120 earlier this year.

The Tri-Eastern Conference Meet is Saturday, Jan. 19, at Hagerstown and the IHSAA Sectional is Saturday, Jan. 26 at South Dearborn.
