Lady Golden Falcons end Lady Patriots’ season

By Vivian Risch, Contributor

Union County and Hagerstown bowed out of last week’s IHSAA Class 2A Girls Basketball Sectional at the hands of Winchester (52-40) and Northeastern (37-33), respectively.

The Lady Patriots had a stellar season.

“I’m not disappointed I know we lost, but the way they played, they never gave up,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “I couldn’t be more proud of these girls. We finished 19-5, a school record.”

Winchester led by seven, 16-9, after the first quarter but the Lady Pats found their stride before halftime. UC allowed the Lady Falcons one field goal and a pair of freebies. Madison Gray and Sophia Knock took care of business in the lane to bring UC to within one, 22-21, as the first half ended.

Union County continued to stay close to the highly ranked Lady Falcons until the final eight minutes. Winchester changed course and finished with 15 points both the third and fourth quarters.

Junior Becca Chamberlain connected on back-to-back 3-pointers that quickly became a 13-2 fourth-quarter run, and Winchester didn’t look back.

Madeline Lawrence and Chamberlain finished in double figures for the Lady Falcons. Lawrence poured in 20 point, and Chamberlain added 15, which came from beyond the 3-point arc.

Madison Gray’s 16 points and four rebounds led Union County.

Looking to the future, UC will be without the senior leadership of Tara Williams, Fayth Hill and Rainey Shepler next season.

“Because of these special seniors, our future leadership will be a plus,” Gray said. “I appreciate everything they have done, and I really think that we’re in a good spot to compete year-in and year-out.”

Hagerstown eliminated

Northeastern edged Hagerstown, 37-33, in the second game.

The Lady Knights led by three after the first quarter andtrailed by one at halftime, they found the third-quarter score tied and then held off a determined Lady Tiger comeback in the final 29 seconds.

NE sophomore Jenna McFarland was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points to go with five rebounds.

Kassidy Oliger paced the Lady Tigers with 14 points and six rebounds.
