Stansberry’s bunt beats Falcons in OT

By Vivian Risch, Contributor

Union County beat Winchester, 5-4, in extra innings in the first game of last Saturday’s double header at Bill Webb Field.

Winchester scored three runs in the first inning and one more in the fourth. The Patriots got on the scoreboard with a run in the third inning and two in the fourth, but still trailed by one in the seventh inning.

UC pitcher Justin Witter threw 10 pitches to retire the Falcons, one, two, three. Three Patriots went to the plate. Alex VanWinkle drew a walk, advanced to second and third base on pitches the catcher couldn’t handle. Then, with one out and VanWinkle on third, Jacob Stansberry stepped into the batter’s box, put down a bunt on the first pitch to the plate. VanWinkle hustled home while the pitcher and catcher scrambled but failed to make a play.

The Patriots won their first Tri-Eastern Conference game, 5-4.

UC scored five runs on seven hits and one error.

Blake Fields led the Patriots went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Tate Swafford and Mason Wicker both hit doubles. Witter picked up the win on the mound with 12 strikeouts, a walk and one earned run in five innings. Jr. pitcher Dustin Freeman struck out three and walked three.

Game 2

The Patriots came back in game two with eight runs on six hits to beat Winchester, 8-3.

Zander Kottka was the winning pitcher with four innings on the mound and a 4-3 UC lead. The senior hurler struck out three and walked three and gave up one hit. Alex VanWinkle finished the game with three strikeouts.
