On less than favorable field conditions, Union County put down Centerville to become the 2019 Tri-Eastern Conference Softball Champions on Senior Night.
“A good win,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “I wasn’t sure what to expect after last night (5-4 loss to North Decatur), but the girls got together and got it done.”
The Lady Pats’ lead-off batter, Tori Russell, walked on four straight pitches and Tara Williams’ fly ball to center scored Russell.
Then with two outs, Sophia Knock reached first on a walk, stole a base and came home on Haylee Richards’ right-field single to give UC a 2-0 lead.
Lincoln came back with a run in the bottom of the first inning and came up with two runs in the second inning to go ahead, 3-2.
After a scoreless third inning, Lincoln circled the bases again in the fourth inning on Laynie Russell’s walk, stolen base, wild pitch and Jaela Patton’s two-base shot to the center- field fence.
Trailing by two (4-2) Union County rallied to tie the score, 4-4, in the top of the fifth inning.
Kristin Klein tripled down the first base line, Williams got on with a walk, and the Lady Eagles intentionally walked Knock to fill the bases. Next in the line-up, Haylee Richards got her second hit of the game and scored both Klein and Williams.
With the score tied going into the sixth, UC turned up the heat. Faith Richardson drew a walk, Roya Walton singled, Klein turned a single into a double and Williams and Knock both singled. Still not finished, pitcher Fayth Hill’s center- field single drove in the final two runs.
Trailing, 9-4, going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Lincoln rallied for two runs on a single, a fielder’s choice, and a pair of doubles. The 9-6 sixth inning score held through the final inning.
Hill pitched the full seven innings with four strike outs and three walks to give the Lady Patriots a 7-0 Tri-Eastern Conference record.
