Golf regional gives Patriots experience

By Vivian Risch, Contributor

Noblesville (300), Yorktown (301) and Hamilton Southeastern (309) advanced out of last week’s IHSAA golf regional at Yorktown to play at the two-day IHSAA boys golf state finals at Prairie View Golf Club at Carmel on June 11 and 12.

The top three teams and top five individuals not on an advancing team at regionals earn the right to play at the state finals.

“We did alright,” UC coach Tony Gulley said. “The boys played good and were more consistent this time - 79, 81, 84, 87 and a 109.”

The Patriots were runners-up to Richmond at Sectional and Centerville was the third-place team to advance.

At Regional, the top three Richmond Sectional teams were re-arranged and not even close.

Union County’s 331 was the eighth-place team out of 18 teams. Centerville’s 359 finished in 16th place, and Richmond’s 364 was the 18th-place team.

Needless to say, Union County was all smiles.

“It could have been better,” Gulley said. “We shot about our average, that’s okay.”

Nick Orr, Luke Yamashiro, Cameron Woods, Tyler Osborne, coach Gulley and UC fans awaited nearby to watch Cody Peters finish on the four-par No. 9 hole.

The other players in the group got on the green in three shots.

Cody’s third shot was short of the green and to the right in the water. After assessing the situation and dropping the ball, the UC junior hit a 20-25 yard chip shot that landed on the green and began to roll. It rolled and rolled and rolled until it could roll no more before dropping into the cup. Peters parred No.9 and finished with 79.

A loud round of applause went up amid cheers from everyone on site, including, “He’s our No. 1,” from the UC camp.

The Patriots closed out with a bang.

The Patriots’ 331 team score was led by Peters’ 79, followed by Woods’ 81 and Osborne’s 84. Yamashiro came in at 87 and Nick Orr had109.

With a banner year behind in the record book, Coach Gulley is already looking to next year.

“I’m real proud of them,” he said. “Now I need a couple boys from the JV to step up.”
