Old Fashioned 4th better than ever

By Vivian Risch, Contributor

The Old Fashion Fourth of July celebration at College Corner last week was like no other from late morning when games and concessions opened until the late night fireworks display that dodged weather conditions all around.

The College Corner Community Club added three new activities to the already popular line-up of things to do.

Aryn May introduced a ladies softball game for ladies 37 and under at noon and later in the day, the first Sidewalk Chalk Art contest on the basketball court drew 12 entries much to the delight of organizer Michelle Yancey. College Corner’s winning chalk art artist was 12-year-old Addison Sintz.

The College Corner Community Club really hit the nail on the head with the third new activity - a Watermelon Eating contest - on a warm and muggy day. Young people were judged in two categories. The younger ones were given a slice of watermelon to devour, and they did. Being the older ones, the competition was kicked up a notch - two slices of watermelon to chow down on. And the winner was eight-year-old Camryn Stewart.

Vendors, games and the College Corner Firemen’s Food Tent brought visitors to the Grove before and after annual Old Fashion 4th of July Parade kicked off at the school with 323 years of service of College Corner Volunteer Fire Department Lifetime Members leading the 55 unit parade as Grand Marshals - David McDill, Marvin Hofer, Jerry Crawford, Joel Summers, Gilbert Hill, John Johnston, Rick Stevens and Dannie Witter.

After the parade, it was back to the softball diamond for the Mature Ladies Softball Game, the Pedal Tractor Pull on the basketball court and a Long Ball Contest under the direction of Tyler Hornung and family.

A co-ed Volleyball Tourney, Old-Timers softball, 3-Legged/Sack Races and Water Balloon Toss gave Old Fashion 4th of July visitors a wide range of activities from which to choose.

The big draw was the evening fireworks around 10 p.m. and they didn’t disappoint. The most heard comment after the show was...“It was the best fireworks show we’ve had in College Corner in several years.”
