Hamman starting his first year as U.C. boys tennis coach

Attention Union County High School students. Now is the time to become involved in fall athletics.

UCHS offerings in the fall include Boys Cross Country, Girls Cross Country, Football, Girls Golf, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Boys Tennis and Volleyball.

Boys tennis coach Rick Hamman is beginning his first year at UC and is eager to welcome new players.

“I have five players at the present time, three returnees and two new players,” Hamman said. “I would like more, including freshmen.”

Seven players are needed to fill three singles positions and two doubles matches and additional players are almost a necessity.

So far, this year’s team is comprised of all upperclassmen.

Returnees Zeb Hall and Nick Collins are juniors and Grady Swafford is a sophomore. Regan Bias and Keaghan Coyle are also sophomores who have come out to play tennis this fall.

Where are the freshmen!?

With four years of high school tennis at Portage High School and highly ranked in the state in singles and doubles in the under 18 category, Hamman is ready to share his tennis knowledge and experiences with Union County players.

“I played in many USTA (United States Tennis Association) tournaments around Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois,” he said. “And went to Butler to play tennis, but transferred to Purdue before my first season and did not pursue tennis after leaving Butler.”

Hamman graduated from Purdue University in 1994 and assisted UC Coach Zach Mustin last season. Mustin is staying on to assist Hamman this year.

In addition to a new coach, the team has revamped tennis courts this season.

“We had some warranty work done on the courts this summer,” UC athletic director Ryan Overholt said. “We had some issues after they did some work last fall and had that taken care off.”

The fresh resurface in red and blue school colors with white lining is a welcome upgrade.

Those interested in finding out more about the UC boys tennis program may contact Coach Hamman at or athletic director Ryan Overholt through the school.
