Father’s Day 2020 was a beautiful day and the Liberty Lions Club didn’t miss the opportunity to stage its annual Father’s Day Car Show in downtown Liberty.

The 106 entries lined up on Union and Market streets attracted a good crowd until clouds rolled in and dampened the very end of announcing the winners with a good dose of rain and wind.

Lions Club president Carl Sharp announced the 1971 Dodge Challenger belonging to Ed Douglass as the Best of Show winner after the wind forced Lions Club members to battle the wind for possession of the announcer’s tent. Lions Club members won and quickly began moving equipment inside.
More than 20 vehicle owners took home trophies and the top 25 overall received plaques.

“We had a good turnout today,” Randy Pollitt said. “People have been shut in for a long time and were ready to get out. Happy they decided to come here.”

Car shows in Union County date back to the early 1990’s when the first car show was held at Whitewater Memorial State Park while Merle Gentry was park manager. The annual event continues to be a crowd-pleaser today in downtown Liberty as a result of the Lions Club involvement.
