Northeastern defeated Hagerstown, 41-33, and Shenandoah turned back Knightstown, 53-31. Shenandoah went on to defeat Northeastern, 55-48 in the championship game.

The Lady Raiders  advanced to the Speedway Regional on Saturday, Feb. 15 to face South Putnam at 10 a.m. Triton Central and Covenant Christian play the second game at noon. The winners will play in the championship game at 8 p.m.

UC fell behind early

Although Hagerstown  led, 10-5, after the first quarter, Union County matched the Lady Tigers point for point (10-10) before the halftime intermission.

“We did not get our best shots and lacked scoring on the perimeter,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “And they made free throws.”
Hagerstown’s double/ triple teaming inside held the Lady Patriots’ leading scorer Madison Gray to 10 points.

Both teams fell off the pace in the second half. Hagerstown outscored UC 8-2 in the third and 12-8 in the fourth quarter.

Hallie Rogers led a trio of Lady Knights in double figures. Rogers had 12, Camryn Bradway 10 and Kassidy Oliger 10.

The Lady Tigers out-rebounded UC, 26-16. Rogers led Hagerstown with 9 and Gray led UC with 6.

With senior leader and second leading scorer Taylor Pinkerton recovering on the bench from knee surgery, the Lady Tigers brought the UC girls basketball program to a halt.

Will be missed but success yields success

“Nineteen wins last year, 17 this year,” Coach Gray said. “This is one of the more successful teams to ever come out of Union County. They’re just good quality kids. They show up every day - we never have to worry about them not being there and quality kids in the classroom, and because of that, our young kids are learning from them. We’re gonna miss them.”

Coach Gray has a favorite saying when it comes to looking ahead to next season – “We don’t rebuild. We reload.”
