Kurt Oetzel and Lonnie Schwartz were ahead 5-2 in the second set of their best of three sets. Franklin County High School's number one doubles duo won the first set against Connersville at the Connersville Sectional 6-4.

Number one singles and number one doubles move on in the individual state tournament action as long as they stay undefeated.

At that time Thursday night, Oct. 3, the Wildcats were already defeated in the sectional's first round as the sectional opened with No. 2 and No. 3 singles as well as No. 2 doubles from all four teams.

Connersville took all three opening matches for a 3-0 lead, making it impossible for the Wildcats to win.

Rushville defeated UC 5-0 at the other end of the tennis courts at CHS.

“By the time they went out there, the match was already decided,” FC boys tennis coach Derrike Kolb said. “But they went out there for themselves. They persevered through it and continued on to play good points and winning the points that needed to be won.”

Oetzel and Schwartz played their Spartan opponents at No. 1 doubles, Sebastian Burch and Seth Spurlock during the regular season and lost in three sets.

Thursday, Burch and Spurlock reeled off wins in five straight games to win the second set, 7-5. Tennis is often based on swings in momentum. The Spartans had the momentum at No. 1 doubles. Between the second and third sets in high school tennis, there is a short break. FC coaches went out and talked to Oetzel and Schwartz.

"At the end of the second set, we said it's important to jump on it early, be aggressive out there so momentum gets on our side and stays on our side in the third set,” Kolb said.

And that is what Oetzel and Schwartz did. They went out, getting on top and keeping the pressure on. They won the third set 6-3 and moved on to the Richmond Regional Tuesday, Oct. 8. Results were unavailable as of press time Tuesday afternoon.

Also, winning and moving on for FC is No. 1 singles player Jack Stirn. He won easily, 6-1, 6-1.

Connersville won the other three spots.

At No. 2 singles, Jonah Graham defeated Brant Ertel, 6-1, 6-1. Gage Brown defeated FC's Landen Wuestefeld, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. And at No. 2 doubles, Connersville's Dylan Bennington and Dustin McCarrell defeated Evan McMillin and Will Wade, 6-1, 6-3.
