Union County won back-to-back road games last week with three-set wins over Franklin County, 25-19, 25-16. 25-19 and Randolph Southern, 25-14, 25-10, 25-15.
Union County’s 6-0 start to begin the match at Franklin County was more than the young Lady Wildcats could overcome.
Emma Townsend’s three aces in a string of five service points were a good beginning for the Lady Pats, but not the end.
Trailing by as many as ll at the end of the first full rotation, the Lady Cats chipped away at the lead before losing, 25-19.
“Franklin County is gritty and able to return a lot of balls,” UC coach Joe Pavey said. “If you don’t control the ball well, then things begin to slip away from what you want to do.”
Shelby Hill served an ace to begin the second set with Townsend in the follow-up slot. The junior server again served three aces in five service points to put UC up, 8-3.
A short time later with Lindsay Lang served a pair of aces that brought the Lady Pats to the brink of victory with a 24-16 score.
Union County came back in the third set with just one ace but turned front row hitters loose. Eleyse Peters finished with 12 kills, Grace Patrick nine, and Townsend and Brooke Fields with five each.
“I thought we did a better job of controlling the ball at Randolph Southern,” Pavey said. “They are young and had a couple of good servers, but we were able to handle them and allow our offense and a rhythm to get going.”
UC defeated the Lady Raiders, 25-14, 25-10, 25-15.
“This allowed me to rest some of our players which I need to do at this time of year.”
Led by Amanda Jahosky’s five aces and four from Hill, UC never trailed in the three sets.
Patrick and Peters led Union County with 10 kills each. Chloe Greene had four kills and two digs in her first game back. Lindsay Lang and Fields were at the top of the digs chart with 15 and 10, respectively. Assist specialists, Kasey Lang and Hill finished with 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
“Looking forward to Thursday night (Oct. 3) when we play Tri and honor our seniors, Lindsay Lang, Amanda Jahosky, Emma Cannon and our manager Erica Ball” Pavey said. “Erica does a lot for our team, more than people realize.
