Franklin County Economic Development Commission president John Palmer and Nick Lawrence of the Wheatley Group updated the Franklin County Redevelopment Commission about the Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative.

The READI program is highly competitive and will dedicate $500 million in state appropriations to promote strategic investments to make Indiana a magnet for talent and economic growth. This regional program would allow for 10 regions to get $50 million in hopes of stimulating growth in their respective communities.

Franklin County does have a good start as last year they developed a regional economic plan with Dearborn County, so the state is already looking at the region. Regions will develop data-driven, actionable and sustainable development plans that outline strategies focused on improving quality of place, life and opportunity. The state is set to finalize funding decisions in November and December of this year.

Palmer also gave an update on the higher speed internet opportunity for Metamora. EDC and Experience Franklin County Indiana, Inc. have been making Metamora business owners aware of this opportunity. When surveyed, a total of 22 of 23 business owners responded in favor of the internet opportunity. Mobilcomm, Inc. is the provider.
