The Monroe Central Golden Bears wasted no time in handing Union County a 53-7 setback at Curry/Phenis Field last week.

The Golden Bears scored seven touchdowns, including a pass interception return, a field goal and a safety. Monroe Central head coach John Hochstetler couldn’t ask for more from his well-rounded team.

The Bears finished with 446 total yards (231 passing and 215 rushing), 17 first downs, no fumbles and a pair of penalties.

“They are a really good team - one of the better teams right up there with Centerville,” UC coach Joel Hofmann said.

The Patriots are feeling the effects of a season of facing hard-hitting teams.

“Right now injuries are mounting up and once one falls it’s just a domino effect,” Hofmann said. “We had one play tonight where we had five or six starters out and had to put bodies in there that aren’t quite ready yet. It’s tough.”

MC scored its first touchdown three minutes into the first quarter, added another TD three minutes later, and a third as time ran out on the clock.

The Patriots’ first four possessions were limited to four downs each and failed to reach mid-field during the first quarter.

In the second period, UC put together a 53-yard touchdown drive in 10 plays to put Ragen Bias around right end and into the end zone. Gabe Cox booted the extra point and the Patriots were on the scoreboard.

MC answered with a TD two minutes later and added a field goal. Another touchdown was added in the fourth quarter along with a safety.

The Patriots host Tri High this Friday, Oct. 16, for another Tri-Eastern Conference match-up and the final game of the season.
