Five months ago Hayleigh Keasling was selected as Union County’s 2019 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient.

Now meet Hayleigh Keasling, the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for exemplary volunteer service.

The award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their community and their country and is sponsored by  Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

The President’s Volunteer Service Award certificate was accompanied by a letter from President Donald Trump, who certified Keasling’s application.

“Congratulations on receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award,” the president’s letter began. “On behalf of a grateful nation, I thank you for your service to your fellow Americans and those most in need. Over the past year, you have served as a model of the American spirit. Your many hours of service have strengthened the bonds of cooperation and trust that bring people together, while helping to address some of the greatest challenges of our time.”

Hayleigh has logged more than 800 community service hours through mission trips to New Orleans and Cassopolis, Michigan, serving in camp counselor and 4-H leadership positions, church youth groups and  hospital volunteer positions.

To say Hayleigh is excited to receive the certificate and congratulatory letters is an understatement.

“It’s an honor for sure,” Hayleigh said. “And with a letter from President Trump. Yes, I’m excited.”

The UCHS senior will continue to volunteer while attending college and beyond.

“I’m a people person. I like being around people and I want to continue to serve as a camp counselor,” she said. “I have kind of thought about the Peace Corp but not sure about that yet.”

She has not yet made a decision about where she will attend college, but says it will probably be IU where she will become involved in their community service programs.
