Union County came away from the Elwood six-team Invitational undefeated last Saturday and a new trophy to display in the trophy cases.

The Lady Patriots defeated Southwood, 14-2, after Elwood beat Jay County 5-1. Jay County defeated Southwood, 14-2, in the consolation game and UCHS blanked Elwood, 10-0, in the championship game.

“It was a long day, but well worth it,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “It was a chance to play in a tournament atmosphere  and a pretty good team in Elwood.”

The Lady Patriots were slow to start against Elwood in the championship game, but it wasn’t long before the bats began to make contact.

“First two innings, no score, really good ball game. In the third inning we kind of broke it open,” Gray said. “Started with a walk, Ally (Gray) got a bunt hit. Then Sophia, Annelea, and Shelby, all got hits - back-to-back-to-back. Scored 2-3 runs out of that and five third inning runs total.”

UC scoring continued until the 10-run rule ended the game after five innings.

“Chloe (Greene) was the player-of-the-game with 3 hits (double and 2 singles)  going 3-for-3,” Gray said. “She pitched an outstanding game – seven Ks and walked nobody. She pitched fantastic – kept them off balance pretty good.”

The Lady Patriots were anything but slow to start  in the opening game with Southwood.

“Got off to a good start against Southwood. Bailey (Mathews) pitched three good innings,” Gray said. “Had couple of late errors that I was not happy with, but other than that, we played well. Won 14-2 in five innings that game.”

Mathews faced 11 batters, gave up no hits and had three strikeouts. Kyleigh Payne finished on the mound, facing 10 batters in two innings and had three strikeouts.

Next opponent
Union County will play in the Franklin County Invitational this Saturday, May 14.
“Gonna be tough at Franklin County. We face Hauser with a really good pitcher at 10 o’clock,” Gray said. “Then we play Blackford. Depending on how we do in those games –  it could be a long day.”
