Union County kept its records clean last week when both the Jr. varsity and varsity posted wins over visiting Batesville.

The Jr. Lady Pats overcame a slow start to beat the Jr. Lady Bulldogs, 33-20. The Varsity Lady Pats had an easier route to a 57-32 victory. Both teams currently hold 3-0 records.

“We played okay tonight, but probably not the best we’ve ever played,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “Batesville had something to do with that. They are long and athletic and going to win a lot of basketball games.”

Previously, Union County held Milan to 27 points and South Decatur to 25, before giving up 32 points to Batesville in the third game of the season.

Union County scored quickly and often after Taylor Pinkerton’s back-to-back 3’s broke a 4-4 tie down the stretch in the first quarter.

Up by six at the first break, the Lady Patriots outscored Batesville by 16 in the second quarter and kept on rolling.

Madison Gray opened the second half with a 3-pointer and a bucket to launch UC’s 15-5 third quarter run.

Gray, Pinkerton and Batesville sophomore  Ashley Nobbe finished in double digits. Gray and Nobbe both finished with 16 points each. Pinkerton rounded out the double-digit trio with 10 points.

The Lady Bulldogs came back in the final period with 13 points, their best offensive effort in the game.

“Genny Antrim had a nice night running the team, and defensively, I thought we played well,” Coach Gray said. “Zoe Murphy’s defense continues to be outstanding. Now she’s looking to score and be aggressive with it. When she’s doing that, we will find success.”

Reserves win
Union County struggled a bit in the first quarter but turned an 8-2 deficit into a 15-10 halftime lead.
The Jr. Lady Pats added 13 points in the third quarter while limiting Batesville to two field goals, and went on to win by 13, 33-20.

Franklin County next
Union County is at Franklin County this Friday, Nov. 22, and returns home to host Oldenburg Academy on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
