The Union City Lady Indians needed an overtime to get by Union County, 61-58, last week. Union City improved to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the Tri-Eastern Conference. The Lady Patriots stand at 12-4 and 1-3 in conference play.

“We knew it would be a good game,” Union County coach Scott Gray said. “They were extremely strong last year, a high scoring team.”

Union County led through the first five minutes but trailed by one (12-11) on a Skylie Lutz field goal that stopped the game to recognize Lutz. Union County Athletic Director Ryan Overholt announced that Lutz had just scored her 1,000th career point.

The Lady Indians responded with a 17-11 run and a 26-24 lead at halftime.

Union County tied the score two times early in the third period before the Lady Indians went ahead, 43-38, at the third quarter break.

The Lady Pats came back to take a 52-50 lead with a little over a minute left in the half. Lutz tied the score 30 seconds later. Union City’s final shot with 5 seconds showing on the clock missed and Sophia Knock’s rebound sent the game into overtime.

“We didn’t get the shots we needed to and turned it over,” Lady Patriot coach Gray said. “Up 4 in overtime with 2-1/2 minutes to go, thought we were in good shape, but before we got another shot off, they were up one. They’re a good team.”

The game’s leading scorer, Maddie Gray, finished with 34 points and five rebounds. Knock added 10 points and five rebounds.

Union City was led by a trio of double-digit scorers. Mariah Claywell had 23 points and six rebounds, Lutz finished with 14 points and four rebounds and Emily Livingston had 10 points and three rebounds.

“We had some careless turnovers,” coach Gray said. “We just have to move on. Have another tough one (Jan. 16) with Blue River. They are really good.”
