Numbers or the lack of numbers had a hand in the Lady Patriots’ 38-23 loss to Connersville last week.

The Lady Pats welcomed Shelby Hill back to the team after an early knee injury kept her on the sidelines this season.

“It’s good to have Shelby back - she’s starting tonight but will see limited minutes,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “Our point guard had surgery – she’s out and two others are not eligible at this time.”

UC’s roster lists 14 total players for both teams (varsity and JV). With the reduction, the roster fell to 11 players. Therefore, the JV game was reduced to two quarters. Union County defeated Connersville, 9-3, in the low scoring junior varsity game but couldn’t match the Lady Spartans in the second half.
After an 8-0 first quarter run, the Lady Patriots led at the break, 8-7 and were on top, 15-11 at halftime.

“I thought we had a good first half. Did a real good job stopping them,” Gray said. “But by the middle of the third quarter, we were just tired.”

Connersville came back after halftime to keep UC scoreless in the third quarter and followed up with eight in the final eight minutes.

“We played three freshmen tonight that are not ready,” Gray said. “When we get everybody back, I think we’ll be in a lot better shape,” Gray said.

Due to lack of numbers, the JV game was played in 2 quarters with the UC reserves on top 15-3.

Eastern Hancock

Numbers followed Union County to Eastern Hancock last weekend.
The Lady Patriots’ roster was trimmed to players in uniform and ready to play at Eastern Hancock last week, but wasn’t enough to bring home a win. The well-coached Lady Royals won the varsity game, 56-26, and the JV game, 22-18, in three quarters.

Coach Samantha Strait dressed six girls for the JV game.
Union County welcomed the return of Hill, who has watched from the bench all season while recovering from a knee injury.

“It’s good to have Shelby back - she’s starting again tonight to get her back in the flow,” Gray said. Hill ended with 7 points and 3 rebounds during her limited time on the court.

“We are still shorthanded with our point guard, Brooke Fields, recovering from surgery and two others who are working their way back. We hope to have them back real soon.”

UC’s roster normally lists 14 total players for both teams (varsity and JV). The reduction of late has fallen to 11 players.

The Lady Royals ran up a 21-4 first quarter lead and went on to lead by 20 (41-21) a halftime.

“Those girls worked hard in the second quarter, as hard as they have worked all year,” Gray said. “We took a step in the right direction and when we get Brooke back, we will look a lot better.”

With a sophomore and junior scoring in double figures, EH went on to post at 56-26 win over Union County. Sophomore Sammie Bolding had 18 points and junior Grace Stapleton 15. UC was led by Hill’s 7
Eastern Hancock out rebounded UC, 19-14 and with less turnovers (UC 22, EH 10).

“When Brooke comes back in the line-up, we will have a lot less turnovers because of the things she does,” Gray said. “Hope to have everybody back next Saturday, Jan. 15.”

JV UC 18, EH 22
Tied at 8-8 after the first quarter and 18-18 at the half, Union County failed to score in the third quarter and lost to the Jr. Lady Royals by four, 22-18.
