Union City
The Union County Lady Patriots headed north last week to engage the Union City Lady Indians in a Tri-Eastern Conference volleyball match. The Lady Pats needed four sets to gain the Tri-Eastern Conference win.

After dropping the first set, 32-30, the Lady Patriots roared back with three consecutive wins, 25-22, 25-10, 25-18.

“We had no winning mentality. Their spikers kept holding us back,” coach Allison Kassens said. “I just told them to go for it.”

The Indian spikers were no match for Union County’s middle hitter, Elyse Peters (22 kills and 3 blocks), and outside sidekicks Hanna Vaughn (5 kills), Chloe Greene (5 kills), Hannah Wulf (5 blocks and 4 kills) and Autumn Cantrell (8 kills).

“Elyse (Peters) is fun to watch, very disciplined,” Kassens said. “It’s exciting to see the complete turnaround since last year.”

The Union City match was Wulf’s first game back due to Covid regulations.

“It was good to have her back in the line-up again,” Kassens said. “We worked hard to get her blocking back.”

Blend in the Patriots’ dig ‘em up trio - Shelby Hill (18 digs), Brooke Fields (14 digs), Kasey Lang (12 kills), and Hill also topping the assists list with 39 assists, that is a good recipe for a well-balanced volleyball team.

Union City had an early 6-3 lead in the second set but failed to keep pace in the final three sets.

Union County’s junior varsity opened the evening with a 2-0 shutout of National Trails’ JV.

The junior Lady Pats won 25-15 and needed only three servers in the second set to win 25-3. Freshman Ava Rambo served 10 consecutive points to start  and classmate Emma Wooley wrapped up the 25-3 win with 13 service points.

Park Tudor /Speedway
It was a win/lose weekend for the Union County girls golf team. The Lady  Patriots defeated Speedway, 3-0, but fell short of the undefeated Park Tudor Lady Panthers.

Against Speedway, UC won the first set, 25-16, and held off the Lady Sparkplugs in the second set,  25-21. The Lady Pats went on to win the third and final set, 25-14.

Hitters Greene, Peters, Vaughn, Cantrell and Wulf paced the Lady Pats with 36 total hits in the match - Greene 14, Peters 11, Vaughn 7, Cantrell 3, Wulf 1.

Peters and Wulf made one block each.

Lang and Peters both served 4 aces to top the aces  chart.  Fields and Greene served 2 aces each and McCashland had one.

The Lady Pats had 56 total digs with 11 UC players contributing to the point total. Double digit “diggers” were Hill (13) and McCashland (10).

Park Tudor’s win over Union County was the 10th consecutive win this season. They lead the Pioneer League with a 3-0 and are ranked fourth in Class 2A.

National Trail
The Union County Lady Patriots slammed the door on National Trail last week with a 3-0 match win before the hometown crowd at Roy Stevens Gymnasium.

Not only did the Lady Patriots win the shutout, they were dominant, limiting the Lady Braves to single digits in the first two  sets, 25-9 and 25-5. The final set went to Union County, 25-12.

Offensively, UC was led by a trio of hitters at the net. Cantrell, and juniors Peters and Greene were responsible for 23 of the Lady Pats’ 27 match kills. Cantrell had 8, Peters 7 and Greene 8.

UC served 17 total aces with Lang (5) and Peters (7) at the top of the chart. Consistent back up (39 digs) was led by Lang’s 8, Fields’ 7 and 9 from Hill. Of UC’s 24 total assists, Hill made 21.
