Union County’s man-to-man defense and solid offense was more than Milan could handle in the Lady Pats’ opening game at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium last weekend.

The JV Lady Patriots opened with a stunning 44-17 win and the Varsity Lady Pats made it look just as easy with a 57-27 win over the visiting Lady Indians.
UC led easily at all quarter stops.

“Taylor Pinkerton and Madison Gray are two of the best players in the area,” coach Gray said. “And they were solid tonight.”
Pinkerton and Madison Gray finished in double figures - 18 and 19 points, respectively.

Pinkerton nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to opening moments of the first quarter followed by Genny Antrim’s steal and lay-up to lead, 8-0.

Sophia Knock and Madison Gray added buckets to give UC a healthy 14-5 lead to take into the second quarter.

Senior Maddie Schmidt was Milan’s only scorer in the second quarter, hitting a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws. Schmidt led Milan with seven points.

Four Lady Pats put 11 up on the scoreboard in the same time period. Halftime score was 25-10.

“Our guard play was good,” Gray said. “The pressure Genny Antrim and Zoe Murphy put on them was just incredible. I don’t think they had anybody in double digits.”

The Lady Patriots offense turned it up a notch in the third quarter with 19 points and adding another 13 in the fourth while coach Gray gave everyone
playing time.

“We’re not going to go up against bodies like that every night,” coach Gray said of Milan’s 6’, 6’1, 6’, 6’1 front line. “We did a fantastic job.”
JV Pats win

Milan led 4-0 to start, but Union County pulled ahead when Kaleah Louden’s assist to Shelby Hill tied the score at 4-4 and freshman Carly McCashland scored from the corner and added a free throw to go up 7-6 at the first quarter break.

UC defense went on to limit the Jr. Lady Indians to single digits in all four quarters.
The Lady Pats’s 20-point third quarter and 15 in the final period put a solid 44-17 win on the scoreboard with Hill’s 14 points and six rebounds leading Union County.
