Union County’s Lady Patriots fell to the Sullivan Lady Golden Arrows, 9-8, in the IHSAA Class 2A Semi-State Championship game at Forest Park last Saturday.

The Lady Pats advanced to the title game, with a 5-4 win over South Vermillion. Sullivan defeated South Ripley, 7-5, to move on.

“It was two good teams fighting it out,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “Never thought it would be a high scoring game, maybe 3-1, 3-2, something like that.”
Tied 0-0 through three innings and 1-1 after the fourth, Sullivan scored two runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.

“It was a battle,” Gray said. “We came out and took the lead, they came back. We took a nice lead and they came back. Give Sullivan credit, they made all the plays they had to make.”

A five-run sixth inning launched UC to a 5-3 lead on four hits. Tori Russell and Annalea Adams got on with singles and Sullivan intentionally walked Sophia Knock to fill the bases.

Shelby Hill hit to left field with a two RBI single, Chloe Greene singled to right field and Bailey Mathews’ fielder’s choice scored Hill. An error put Walton on base and scored Greene at the same time.

The Lady Pats added another two runs in the top of the seventh to lead 8-3. The Arrows went to work scoring four runs before their second out but still trailing, 8-7. A walk put Riley on base and three pitches later, sophomore second baseman hit a centerfield homer to win the game, 9-8, and start the celebration.

“Extremely proud of all these young ladies – how much work they’ve put in, how hard they have worked to get us up to this point,” Gray said. “That last play was out of our hands. It’s a tough loss but that’s softball.”

Sullivan pitchers Kendal Edmondson and Kate Ridgway struck out 2, walked 1 and gave up six hits to go with six errors in the field.

UC’s Chloe Greene went the distance on the mound with 12 strikeouts and a walk.

“Its been a great season. One I’ll never forget,” Gray said. “This team has the win record with 30. Sophia may have home run record. A lot of good and exciting games from a really young team.”

Sullivan (28-4) and Pioneer (34-2) will play for the Class 2A State Championship at Center Grove (Greenwood) at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June12.
