The Union County Patriots beat Winchester’s Golden Falcons, 5-2, last Friday, to go up 1-0 in the Tri-Eastern Conference.

“It’s nice to get that first (TEC) win,” UC coach Jordan Ashbrook said. “I think we are headed in the right direction.”

Originally scheduled as a double-header on Saturday with rain forecast all day, the TEC match-up was moved up a day and became one game on Friday evening.

Winning pitcher Mason Hornung faced nine Falcon batters in the first three innings. He struck out four and let teammates back him up with putouts and a 5-6-3 double play in the third inning.

UC baserunners in the first three innings failed to complete the circle and trailed, 1-0, in the top of the fourth.

Noah Taylor led off with a single, moved to second when Devyn Shepherd’s HBP, stole third and scored on Winchester’s first of two errors in the inning. Shepherd and Eric Burdine followed Taylor around the bases to put the Patriots out in front, 3-1.

Union County added two runs in the sixth and Winchester came back with a run in the seventh. Final score of the TEC match-up – UC 5, Winchester 2.
UC scored 5 runs on six hits and 7 stolen bases.

Hornung gave up 2 runs on 4 hits, a walk, and 9 strikeouts in seven innings.
