Union County got off to a great start at Batesville last weekend but the Bulldogs’ halftime change of pace turned the tables.

“We worked on taking care of the ball and beating their press,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “And did a good job up to the half.”

The Patriots’ 18-12 first quarter lead was fueled by 3-point field goals and a 6-4 rebound advantage.

“They forced turnovers early, but we handled the pressure,” McCool said. “Took care of the ball and hit 3s.”

The Patriots stayed on course to lead 26-23 at halftime with Batesville closing in.

“When they switched to half court in the second half,” McCool said, “we didn’t do so well and our shots didn’t fall.”

UC was held to three field goals in the period and four in the fourth. The Bulldogs saved their best offense for last, scoring 18 points on 14 field goals, including a pair of treys and 4-of-4 at the free throw line.

The game’s leading scorer, Batesville senior RJ Powell, netted 14 points and was the Bulldogs’ only scorer in double digits.

UC junior Keaghan Coyle and senior Alex VanWinkle led the Patriots with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

“This was a good game for us going into sectional because we will likely see more of this then,” McCool said.
