Union County started the girls basketball season a day ahead of schedule last week at Milan. The girls basketball match was moved up a day due to the Milan football team’s advancement in the sectional. Milan lost a 6-0 decision to North Decatur on Friday night.

The Lady Patriots posted a convincing 63-35 win over the Lady Indians.

“We got off to a slow start, but once we started hitting our shots, it was better,” UC coach Scott Gray said.

Although the Lady Pats never trailed in the opening period, Milan stayed close and tied the game, 9-9, and went ahead, 12-9, on Angela King’s second three-pointer within a two-minute stretch. But UC’s Brooke Fields countered with her own three-pointer to give the Lady Pats a 13-12 lead to take into the second period.

Riley Clark’s bucket at the top of the second was a 14-13 lead changer that didn’t last long.

UC’s 7-2 rally, followed by a 9-0 run to end the quarter, put the Lady Pats in the driver’s seat, 33-19, at halftime.

The tide had turned and Union County was in control 52-26 at the three-quarter mark and a 63-35 final score.

Madison Gray’s 25 points led Union County with 24 of them coming in the middle two periods.

Coach Gray was pleased to see his three Lady Pats in the middle finish in double figures. In addition to Gray’s 25 points and four rebounds, Shelby Hill had 10 points and three rebounds and Sophia Knock finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

Union County led in three-point shots as well. Fields was the first to hit from beyond the 3-point arc, Lauren Alldredge drilled a pair of treys and Gray had four 3-point shots in her team high 25.

“I seen several things we would like to clean up,” coach Gray said. “And seen some things I’m real happy with. I’m thrilled with the first game.”

Next on schedule
Union County hosts Randolph Southern on Saturday, Nov. 28 and then plays at Talawanda on Friday, Dec. 2 and Shenandoah on Monday, Dec. 5.
