Sandra Walter, a 1988 graduate of Brookville High School and daughter of Carl and Barb Walter of Cedar Grove, was approved April 25 by the Franklin Township School Board of Marion County to become the next athletic director at Franklin Central High School.

For the last 10 years, Walter had served on the executive staff of the Indiana High School Athletic Association as an assistant commissioner and administered the sports of boys and girls soccer, girls basketball and gymnastics. She is completing her 30th year in the education field and remains assistant commissioner through the end of the month.

“Sandra has served the student athletes of Indiana, the membership of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and thousands of licensed officials with exemplary dedication and passionate service in her role as Assistant Commissioner,” said IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig. “On behalf of our board of directors and staff, we thank Sandra for her leadership and offer our best wishes for success in the future.”

Walter's time at the IHSAA also included working alongside the Technology Director in developing and implementing a membership portal inclusive of all IHSAA customers – officials, coaches, member schools and affiliates connected to education-based athletics across the state of Indiana. In addition, she assumed leadership of the officials and oversight of sportsmanship initiatives.

No stranger to running an athletic department, Walter served 10 of her 12 years at Lawrence Central High School as the Bears' athletic director, was AD at Knightstown from 1998-99 and women's sports director at Hamilton Southeastern from 1999-2000. While starting her career at Rushville as a mathematics teacher (1992-98), she also took on added duties as assistant athletic director for the Lions (93-98) and coached the Lady Lions' track and field team from 1995-98.

As a school administrator, Sandra served as tournament director for 18 different IHSAA sports and is still an active member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (IIAAA), serving as president of the IIAAA in 2007-08.

Walter earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Ball State University in 1992 and completed her master's in athletic administration in 1997.
