Union County’s girls golfers showed they could stack up against any team in the area after finishing in the top half of two season-opening tournaments earlier this week.

Monday at Richmond’s Elks Club, the Lady Patriots – or anyone else, for that matter – weren’t catching up to the Batesville Lady Bulldogs, whose collective 313 was 62 strokes better than runner-up Barr-Reeve. But the Pats were in the hunt for third place, eventually falling short to the Richmond Lady Red Devils 384-390.

At the annual Union County Invitational played Tuesday at Liberty Country Club, UC did sneak into the top three with a combined round of 395. Batesville was again far ahead of the pack with 325 and Richmond shot 382.

Senior Peityn Gillman paced the Patriots both days – finishing at 72 Tuesday and 79 in the opener. The 72 tied her with Batesville’s Ava South at LCC as Bulldog senior Addyson Weiler completed an individual win with 71. Gillman’s 79 was good for fourth at the Elks, trailing only Weiler and South and the incredible winning score by East Central’s Rowan Pies (66).

Other scores Monday for the Pats were 86 for junior Nora Robinson, 96 for sophomore Melanie Goecke and 129 for Addisyn Lathery in her varsity debut. Tuesday, Robinson shot 89, Goecke 101 and Lathery 133 in the friendly confines of the Liberty course.

Trailing UC Monday were EC’s 403, Winchester’s 421, Rushville’s 427, Centerville’s 434 and Connersville’s 469. Behind the Patriots Tuesday were EC’s 419, Delta’s 427, Franklin County’s 436 and Connersville’s 464. Rushville had an incomplete score.

UC will next compete on the road Friday, facing Tri-Eastern Conference foes Cambridge City Lincoln and Tri High.
