Lady Cats stumble after shutout

Getting another solid pitching effort from junior Michaela Ferman and consistent offense throughout, the Wildcats ended the game with the 10-run rule in effect. Needing at least a run in the top of the fifth to close things early, FC added on a 4-spot to attain that goal.
The Cats scored in each of the five frames, putting up crooked numbers in four of those. FC had a deuce after the first half-inning.
Off starter Paige Oldham, leadoff Maci Lake drew a base on balls and stole second. A strikeout later, a base hit by Josie Rolfes put runners at second and third. Oldham earned another whiff but Kloe Bolos made it 2-0 with a solid shot into center field for a single.
Ferman retired the Bulldogs in order, bringing FC quickly to the plate. The hurler started the next rally with a double to the fence in left, giving way to courtesy runner Kylie Lea. Catcher Anne Becker singled her home with a knock to right, also being replaced on the basepaths by Shaden Galyen. After a strikeout, Lake singled to right and again stole second.
Kassidy Schell was hit in the helmet by a pitch and runner Emma Stadtmiller took over at first to load the bases. Rolfes cleared the bags with a double to deep center. Oldham kept it at 6-0 by getting a groundout and lineout.
Oldham led off the BHS second with the first of the Dogs’ three hits. Courtesy runner Anna Gerth was then erased in a rundown after attempting to steal. Around a walk to freshman Calli Fletcher, Ferman fanned Sarah Ripperger and Sophie Lee to keep BHS scoreless.
FC scored just one in the third, but it was a big shot. Becker cranked an Oldham offering about 300 feet over the fence in center after two were out.
Ferman continued a roll of seven straight Bulldogs retired, which lasted through the bottom of four.
In FC’s fourth, Lake again started things with an infield single. Catcher Emma Belter tried a pickoff at first, leading to an error and Lake moving to second. Rolfes drew a walk before Bree Bischoff’s single to right scored Lake with the eighth run. Later, another BHS error allowed Rolfes to come home; Bischoff was thrown out attempting to get to third on the play, ending the inning.
Senior Camryn Brewer got FC started in the fifth with a walk and Ferman (courtesy runner Lea) did the same, both off reliever Katie Mobley. Belter retired rival backstop Becker nicely on a pop-up behind the plate, Brewer smartly moving to third on the out. Kensee Ferman scored Brewer with a cued single to right. With two runs in, Lake added two more by reaching the outfield grass beyond the fence in center.
BHS began its fifth with back-to-back singles by Ripperger and Fletcher. But Ferman held both runners on by striking out the side.
Ferman struck out 8 in the shutout. Oldham fanned 5 in her four innings. FC finished with 11 hits as Lake had 3, Becker 2 and Rolfes a pair.
Vs. Union County (April 17)
In a pair of offensively charged games at FCHS Saturday, the Wildcats were on the wrong end of a sweep against a very good Union County club. The Patriots held on for an 8-7 win in game one and cranked out a 17-5 victory in the second contest.
In the opener, UC was up 5-1 through five. The Cats tied the game with a 4-run sixth. The Pats then put up a 3-spot in the seventh before FC’s two in the bottom of seven came up just shy.
Becker and UC’s Shelby Hill homered in the game, each driving in 3. Bischoff had a double among her 4 hits, adding 2 RBI and 2 steals. Sophia Knock doubled and tripled for the visitors and Whitney King hit a double. Annalea Adams had 2 RBI. Lake added a stolen base. M. Ferman took the loss while sophomore Chloe Greene earned the win, each going the distance.
Game two was called after five frames, UC scoring multiple times in each of the five off Bischoff (L) and freshman Bella Lee. Freshman Kendal Cain also pitched. Freshman Bailey Mathews won for UC, striking out 9; she added 3 hits and 2 RBI at the plate. Greene homered (3 RBI) and Knock added a triple (3 RBI); King produced 2 doubles and Hill 2 RBI. Brewer, M. Ferman and Kiersten Schell doubled for FC while Rolfes had 2 hits and 2 RBI.
FC (5-5, 2-1) lost to East Central 15-3 Monday and hosts South Dearborn April 21.
