Dick YJ, as he was fondly known, was born on July 22, 1931 in Brookville, attended Lew Wallace Elementary School and graduated from Brookville High School in 1949. He joined the Navy and served from 1951-1953 during the Korean War.
He served on the LAPD for four years while attending Long Beach State College and graduated in 1961 with a degree in police science. After which he served in the U.S. Treasury Bureau in The Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Division for 20 years.
After retiring to Hawaii, he served an investigator for the Hawaiian Child Support Enforcement Agency. He also ran for Hawaii State Senate from the Waianai Coast.
Richard is survived by daughter Richelle Steininger of Moreno, CA; and her children Erick, David, Matthew, Andrew and Holly, also sisters Anne Johnson of Oceanside, CA, Martha Shea of Brookville and brother Robert Johnson of Anderson. Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings; Catherine Helen, Lorraine, Bill, Howard, John and Margarete and many nieces and nephews.
Celebration for his life is planned for Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Old Brick Church in Brookville. Memorial contributions can be directed to Brookville Public Library.
