Union County’s three-sport athlete, Homecoming Queen and UCHS’s number-one fan, Sophia Knock, made it official this week. She will take the next step in her softball career at Division I Longwood University at Farmville, Virginia.

Sophia signed the official agreement at a signing ceremony in the UCHS team room with her parents, coaches, friends and teammates/classmates looking on.

“We are beyond proud of her and the choice she has made,” Sophia’s mother Melissa said.

Last season, Sophia left her name in the UC Softball record book numerous times, including two-time Tri-Eastern Conference All Conference, .600 batting average, .698 on base average, 63 hits, 62 runs, 49 RBI, 14 doubles, 6, triples and 11 home runs. Those accomplishments helped get her to the college level.

The Longwood orange and blue Lancers are members of the Big South Conference.

Union County can truly call Knock a hometown athlete. She began with Union County’s T-ball teams but T-ball was only the beginning. She moved on to school softball and travel teams and other sports. She has excelled in soccer, basketball and softball while attending Union County College Corner schools.
“She had remarkable little League coaches,” Melissa said. “All the hometown coaches have been wonderful.”

Indiana Magic travel team coaches, Bill Gray and Steve Ruble, have worked with Sophia since the age of eight. and are supportive of the college choice she has made.

Sophia also accomplished much during travel team seasons, including a home run she hit in a home run derby in Atlanta.

“I swung and sent it over the fence, over the trees and beyond never to be heard from again,” she said with a smile. “It was fun.”

Sophia will work toward a degree in biology at Longwood and come back to Indiana to earn a veterinary degree.

On a campus visit, Sophia’s mother recalled her daughter’s reaction while in Farmville...”This is Libertyville.”

Longwood offers the most small classes of any Virginia public university taught by full-time faculty members and has a vibrant residential campus community where you can make lifelong friends and pursue your interests with nearly 200 clubs and organizations.
