The Northeastern Knights took the high road to an 84-47 Tri-Eastern Conference victory over Union County last week.

Led by three in double figures, the Knights rolled out to a 25-11 first quarter lead and kept on rolling.

“We weren’t mentally ready for the physicality of their press,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “Then we had a few turnovers early on and we let it affect the rest of the game.”

NE’s Kolden Vanland-ingham, Raedhyn Foust and Payton Lumpkin led all scoring with 34, 21 and 14 points, respectively.

Vanlandingham was the Knights’ go-to-guy who scored all but two of his 34 points in three quarters.

“We started rushing shots and forcing looks to try to get everything back at once,” McCool said. “You can’t do that against a good team like Northeastern.”

They added 20 points in the second period and limited UC to 5.

The Patriots picked up the pace in the second half, posting 14 points in the third and 16 in the fourth, but it was too little, too late. The Knights led, 64-31, after three quarters and 84-47 at the final buzzer.

“We need to regroup before Friday (North Decatur) and get back to how we were playing previously,” McCool said.

The Patriots finished with three in double figures - Alex VanWinkle had 14, Jaden Bias 10 and Keaghan Coyle 10.

The Knights improved to 15-3 and remained undefeated (6-0) in the TEC. The Patriots dropped to 7-11 and 5-2.
