Over 90 dogs rescued from residence

By Cassie Garrett-

An ongoing investigation into possible animal cruelty by the Franklin County Sheriff's Department led to the seizure and rescue of more than 90 dogs.

On Friday, July 15, around 7 a.m., Franklin County Sheriff's Department deputies served a search warrant at a residence on Beacon Road in Salt Creek Township. Within the home, deputies found over 90 dogs, primarily boxers, pit bulls, and boxer/pit bull mixes.

The dogs were removed with the assistance of the Franklin County Small Animal Control Officer, Franklin County Humane Society, Franklin County Health Department, Indiana Board of Animal Health, Ohio County Animal Shelter, SPCA of Cincinnati, and several rescue shelters. The dogs were transferred to a temporary exam station at the Metamora Volunteer Fire Department, where veterinarians examined the animals and provided necessary care.

“We were happy to help,” said Jessica Parker with Friends of the Franklin County Animal Shelter. "We had an absolutely amazing group of community members, volunteers, and law enforcement that were very supportive of the efforts today. Deputy Roberts took on this case and has done an amazing job. He handled it very well."

The Friends of Franklin County Animal Shelter and the Franklin County Humane Society gathered volunteers together to assist in the rescue of the animals. The volunteers collaborated and reached out to numerous rescue organizations to help with the placement of the dogs; seven remain at the Friends of Franklin County Animal Shelter.

"The veterinarians and Indiana Board of Animal Health were so professional and helpful in the whole process," Parker continued. "The various rescues from neighboring states helped us get these animals into a better situation, and we appreciate them! "

The identity of the owners, a male in his 50s and a female in her 40s, is not being released at this time. Once the investigation is complete, deputies will forward their findings to the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office for consideration of what, if any, formal charges will be filed against the couple. Charges are merely an accusation, and all criminal suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
