Have you noticed American Flags atop the flag poles at Union County High School?

UCHS principal Warren Cook noticed the absence of the Stars and Stripes on Patriot Boulevard near the main entrance and on South Layman Street at the entrance to Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium. Cook is in his first year at Union County High School and decided to do something about it.

“I have always had a flag in my room and/or office for 30 years,” Cook said.

The first-year UC principal turned to the students for assistance and received it.

“We have students here who have an interest in the military and UC graduate Marine Staff Sgt. Tyler Powell agreed to assist in the process,” Cook said.

A bit of contact between the students, volunteers and Powell turned out to be a step in the right direction. They learned to properly fold the flag, how to hold it and present it to another person and how to attach the flag to a flag pole and raise and lower it.

Today, Nathaniel Tolford, Dalton Bach and Jack Whipple show up every morning before classes begin and each afternoon as classes are dismissed.
“They have taken it very seriously and are eager to do it in the right manner,” Cook said. “I couldn't be more proud of them.”

Some schools may have janitors post the flag but Cook thought it should be done right and in a formal fashion. The students agreed and on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, local veterans and students were invited to attend the morning posting of the American Flags at Union County High School.
