Donald Ivan Lewis

December 5, 2023 at 4:30 p.m.

Donald Ivan Lewis, age 93, of Indianapolis, died Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Born August 20, 1930, in Brookville, he was the son of the late Dewey and Emma (Schutt) Lews. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to the former Arbia Faye Knupp on February 14, 1959 and she preceded him in death on December 31, 2017.

Don was retired, having been self-employed for much of his life in the insurance industry in Indianapolis.

Don loved being a father, coached his children in many sports and never missed a game, school event or a bad dad joke. Many believed he raised his children like wild animals, but who's to say. He was ahead of his time in that he taught his boys that cooking, washing dishes, and laundry were not “women's work.” He taught his daughter that she could do anything a man could do. He always wanted his children to do better than he had. He was very proud of the educational and professional achievements of his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include four children, Michael Andrew (Kim) Lewis, of Cincinnati, David Ellis(Sue) Lewis, of Indianapolis, Scott Douglas Lewis of Indianapolis and Sara Jane Waits of Louisville; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, and wife Faye, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Lewis and one grandchild, Grace Emma Lewis.

The Bernard Hurst Post #77 of the American Legion Honor Guard will officiate the Military Graveside Service at 12:00 noon, Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Brookville.

The staff of Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home are honored to once again serve the Lewis Family. To sign the online guest book or send personal condolences, please visit  www.phillipsandmeyers.com.
