John R. Gilbert

John R. Gilbert, Sr. , 81, a longtime Rushville resident, passed away November 29, 2023 in Greenfield. John was born January 26, 1942 in Brookville to Luther Gilbert and Fannie (Thomas) Kennedy. He was a 1960 graduate of Manilla High School and served in the US Army Reserves. John married Madeline (Weiss) on October 20, 1961 and she preceded him in death on June 11, 2018.

John retired in 1994 from GE where he had worked several years as a machine operator in Shelbyville and Fort Wayne. He was a member of the Rushville VFW and served with the Rush County Veteran's Honor Guard. John was an avid Purdue basketball, Notre Dame football and Dallas Cowboy fan!

He will be missed by his daughters, Penny Wesling and Brenda (Bob) Bryant all of Rushville, his sons, John "Butch" Gilbert, Jr. of Orlando and Steven (Crissy) Dean Gilbert of Rushville, a brother, Vernon (Helen) Gilbert of Greenfield, a sister, Janice Wright of Rushville, 9 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Gary Bogard, a grandson, Dustin Gilbert, brothers, Don, Jack, Wayne, Larry and Bill Gilbert and a sister, Cora Carter.

Services will be private. John Wall will preside and burial will be in Rushville's East Hill Cemetery.
