Franklin Co. community rallies around Orschell family - #BubStrong

By Cassie Garrett-

Franklin County community member Derik "Bub" Orschell has recently suffered from unexpected, serious health issues. He and his wife, Kehlie, and their two kids, Ryder and Lennox, call Brookville home. If you're from Franklin County, the Orschell name is familiar. Bub is a teacher, and if you have children involved in athletics, Bub is likely to have coached or refereed those children. He is an active member of the community; he's president of the Eagles, a member of the American Legion, and a dear friend to many.

It is evident the impact he and his family have on Franklin County. Since the news of Bub's condition has spread, the community has rallied behind the family to offer support in any way possible. Last Wednesday, the grandstands were filled after just a few hours of notice on social media of a prayer vigil to be held for Bub. People gathered along the track and in the field of the town park to pray for Bub. After the vigil, Brookville resident Kelly Bulmer took to social media and shared her heart.

"If you remember my post on scholarship night about my wish for the class of 2023, it was to know how lucky they are to call this place home. I know it will take a while for some of them to appreciate it. It took me over a decade after graduating to get it. Sitting in the grandstands at our town park tonight, I couldn't help but become overwhelmed with emotions. The grandstands were full, and there were people standing on the track and on the field, all in support and solidarity, lifting one of our families up in prayer.

The fact that this community filled the stands was not a surprise. It's what we do. We show up. And we've proved this time and time again. When there is a family in need, we rally. We pull up our sleeves and get to work. We are neighbors first. Differences are put aside, and we focus on how we can help. I love this community. I can't think of a better place to call home and raise my family."

In an effort to support the Orschell family, Frozen Flamingo set up outside of Third Place on Friday, June 16, from 6- 9 p.m., Fifty percent of the proceeds went directly to Bub and his family. After the fundraiser, Frozen Flamingo shared on its Facebook page the following, "Wow! The support of our community never ceases to amaze us. When times get tough, Brookville always has each others' backs. We are SO HAPPY to announce that, because of you all, we were able to donate $1,058 to the Orschell family."

Fuel Nutrition in Brookville, where Derik's wife Kehlie is a regular, also came up with an idea to support the Orschell family by offering a tea called #Bubstrong. A portion of every Bubstrong tea sold went to help alleviate medical and transportation costs.

The Franklin County Youth Football 6th grade team created a banner to show support for Coach Bub Orschell. All FC Youth Football players and parents were invited to sign the banner and show their support on Monday, June 19, at Codiano Field in the Brookville Town Park.

The community can continue to rally for the Orschell family by purchasing a "Bub Strong" shirt that says, "His fight is my fight." All proceeds with be sent to Kehlie Orschell.  Shirts can be purchased by clicking the following link, https://www.bonfire.com/orschell-family160-1.
