September 14, 2023 at 12:00 a.m.
The "Growing Laurel Food Pantry" grand opening was held on Saturday, Sept. 9. On its first day, the pantry served 204 individuals.
"It was wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate the opening of the Growing Laurel Pantry," said the Franklin County Purdue Extension. "It was a great turnout for opening day."
Besides the grand opening of the Growing Laurel Food Pantry, there was also a celebration for the Growing Laurel Community Garden that was planted last summer. At 10:30 a.m., a cooking class with the Purdue Extension Nutrition Education Program was held. Free food and activities for the whole family were also available.
The pantry is in the Laurel Community Center located at 218 N. Clay St., Laurel. The pantry will be open again on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The FC Purdue Extension shared this project wouldn't be possible without the hard work and support of the community.
“We want to give a special thanks to Becky Marvel, Purdue Extension Franklin County, Veronica Bullock, Steve Davis with Gleaners, Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, volunteers, those who donated, and many others. Without you, it wouldn't have been possible!"
