As many know, the Union County Public Library is undergoing some major renovations and remodeling. Starting this week, the construction team will begin digging the footers for the connection piece and the large community center space. Since the start of renovations, a lot of work has already been completed in order to prepare the inside of the building for construction leading into the new space.

The library will be adding a community center space. This will be a large, open area that will be used for meetings, receptions/large gatherings, and recreational use. There will be a basketball court and pickleball courts for use in the community center space. The upper level will hold an indoor track, which is great for those who have kids playing down below but want to keep active. The parking lot will also expand so that the main entrance will lead to the connection piece between these two buildings.

Adding to the library will also be two private meeting rooms, kitchen, offices, and storage. Other changes include fixing any damage or broken areas that were identified during their facilities assessment.

Currently, the children’s department of the library sits at a foundation-owned building directly across the street from the library. The adult’s department is housed in the old antique store.

The library will still keep its original 1915 build and once the renovations are complete, the genealogy department will remain in the historic part of the building. One of the goals is to match the historic value by having the same brick and roof tiles in the new addition. The children’s section will remain in the basement, and the adult’s section will continue to be upstairs once repairs are finished.
