September has been designated International Underground Railroad Month to honor and celebrate the bravery of freedom seekers and those who aided them in their quest for freedom. While many are familiar with the Levi Coffin House, which provided refuge for escaped slaves in nearby Fountain City, not everyone may be aware that Union County was a part of the Underground Railroad network, with one of its routes passing through the area. The William Beard residence on Salem Road was also an essential part of the Underground Railroad for years.

In honor of International Underground Railroad Month, next week’s edition of the Liberty Herald will feature an in-depth look at Union County’s role during this significant historical era.
